David Bowie’s death earlier this year was felt deeply by the music industry. At the recent Grammys, Lady Gaga performed a medley of Bowie’s hits that was somewhat divisive. However, on Tuesday, the BRIT Awards were held, and since they are the United Kingdom’s equivalent of the Grammys, and since Bowie was a British artist, it shouldn’t be surprising they pulled out all the stops in tribute of him as well.
Bowie was given the Icon Award, which was introduced by Annie Lennox. Gary Oldman then accepted the award in Bowie’s honor, at which point Bowie’s former backing band came out to play a selection of his hits. To cap off this tribute to Bowie, Lorde took the stage to perform his hit song “Life on Mars?” Lorde has discussed previously how much Bowie meant to her, so this was a huge honor for her, one assumes, and she was up to the task.
“He was the very definition, the living embodiment of that singular word; icon." – Gary Oldman https://t.co/R8sYJ25ffy

In addition to Bowie, Adele was a major presence at the BRIT Awards. She took home four awards, including something called Global Success, and also Best Album. Given her success on the night, it is fitting that Adele also got to close out the show with her performance of “When We Were Young.”
