If Mount Eerie didn’t release one of the best albums in 2017 with A Crow Looked At Me, then the Phil Elevrum vehicle certainly put together one of the most emotionally raw. As a concept record about the recent death of his wife Geneviève, the album gave listeners a totally unvarnished sonic approximation of what grief really felt like. Just a year removed, and Elevrum looks prepared to double-down on that concept with a brand new record.
Titled Now Only, Mount Eerie’s latest is set to drop just a couple of months from now on March 16th. Today, the group has shared the first offering from that record, a cataclysmic, 11-minute long ballad titled “Distortion.” Opening with a thunder of overdriven guitars, thew song morphs over time into a contemplative monologue about what life is like “in the shadow of death.”
