Sam Smith has cornered off a cozy spot in our pop music zeitgeist as the new sultan of sadness. His weepy, yet not too dark ballads have captured hearts the world over. So, when news broke today that Smith would have to cancel the remainder of his tour in Australia to rest after a vocal hemorrhage, we can only imagine how fans of the “Stay With Me” singer felt.
Smith said of his injury on Instagram:
“I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal cords. The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue. I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. This kills me.”
His debut album, In The Lonely Hour, just reached No. 1 in Australia nearly a year after its release according to Billboard. While his dates may be cancelled down under, his tour in the U.S. coming this summer is still on as of now.
First Adele suffers this fate, now Sam Smith? Who will sing sorrowful British ballads now? Thankfully, we still have Vin Diesel around to save and serenade us in these situations. You can always count on family.
