While rock fans continue to cross their fingers in hope of seeing the Smiths, Talking Heads, and Led Zeppelin rise from the ashes once again, another massive reunion might just be around the corner. Billy Corgan has been teasing a revival of the classic lineup of Smashing Pumpkins for the last year or so in a wide variety of interviews. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but a recent posting on Instagram has stoked the fires even higher.
Corgan shared a candid shot of himself hanging out with Pumpkins’ one-time guitarist James Iha and current drummer Jimmy Chamberlain. “Not sure what cross-eyed spy took this photo, but we had a visitor to the studio the other day,” he wrote in the caption. “So many memories when you put the three of us together.” Some more eagle-eyed observers have noted a fourth person in the image, peeking out just in front of Chamberlain could be former bassist D’Arcy Wretzky, but without identifying her specifically, the odds of that are unlikely.
Wretzky seems to be the final piece of the puzzle, but Corgan revealed in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that they too have reconciled. “I talk to D’arcy all the time,” he said. “We reconnected, I guess, about a year and half ago. We talk really regularly. I’m really happy to have her back in my life.”
As far as reunions go, this one feels like just a matter of time. Given their history of re-assembling the Misfits and the Replacements, as well as their hometown ties to the Pumpkins, Chicago’s annual Riot Fest seems like the ideal venue for this to go down, but then again, who really knows?
