Now that we’ve gotten a little used to having new music drop on Friday, we’re in a full swing of new releases. Though someone didn’t exactly give Wilco the hint with their surprise release of Star Wars, we’ve got other huge albums today from Tame Impala, Future, and Ratatat. Not to mention other big releases from The Chemical Brothers, Jason Isbell, MS MR, and many more. Here are the new albums you need to hear this week.
Tame Impala – Currents
After months of previews, videos, and battling leaks of varying quality, Currents has finally arrived. The third studio album from the alt rock Aussies could truly be the moment that brings them from indie rock heroes to stadium rock legends.
We’re at a strange crux musically where these two worlds can easily meet and share with each other. Songs like “Cause I’m A Man,” “Disciples,” and “Nangs” have teased us enough, but this full project is easily one of the best of the year thus far.
Future – DS2
Now, almost in the complete opposite position of Tame Impala is Future. After a big year of mixtapes with Monster, Beast Mode, and 56 Nights, Future tweeted out of nowhere last week that he was dropping his new album in the next seven days. DS2, or Dirty Sprite 2 for the uninitiated, is almost a victory lap after a debatably lackluster 2014. Tracks like “Where Ya At?” featuring Drake and “Real Sisters” hit hard, along with some previous mixtape cuts like “Trap N*ggas.” DS2 is another shiny notch on Future Hendrix’s belt.
Ratatat – Magnifique
Magnifique is the first time we’ve heard from the Brooklyn instrumental duo in five years. So, how have they grown since they’ve been away? There’s a lot more emotion on this LP, for starters. While their earlier records were more experimental with regard to their sound, this album sounds like a band who’s sure of themselves and knows exactly how to communicate their feelings without ever saying a word. It’s an incredibly welcomed return.
Here are the rest of the week’s releases.
