Summer is drawing to a close, which means there are a lot of angst-filled teachers out there. With nothing but lesson plans, meetings, and dealing with other people’s kids to look forward to, the upcoming school year is a ball of stress for educators. To help relieve some of this pressure, staff members of the West Des Moines, Iowa, School District decided to take a routine welcome-back meeting and turn it into an Off-Broadway spectacle.
During a speech by district Superintendent Lisa Remy (sadly, no one named Chalmers) at a local high school, a staff member stood up and began singing “One More Day” from Les Miserables. Within seconds, nearly 30 faculty and staff were belting out the tune. The flash mob all made their way to the school’s stage, singing parody lyrics such as, “One more day all on my own / Do we know the Common Core? No more time for preparation / Will my lessons be a bore?”
If these teachers do another flash mob video at the end of the school year, I hope it’s to Europe’s “The Final Countdown.”
