Did you see that thing with the old guy who did stand-up for the first time? You probably did, because it got a lot of traction on the internet, for whatever reason. Apparently an old person telling jokes is exciting and interesting? Did people think that old people didn’t tell jokes or try and be funny? Anyway, the overarching lesson is that the general public likes to see old people doing things that are seemingly incongruous to their age. In that regard, have we got just the thing for you.
Would you be interested in a grindcore band that is fronted by a 67-year-old woman? If the answer is yes, then may we introduce you to The Grindmother? They deliver what they promise. It’s a grindcore band whose singer is a grandma. Also, she’s Canadian. Do you like Canadians? Then this just got even better for you.
Apparently, Ms. Grindmother got the taste for screaming her vocal cords raw whilst performing backup vocals for her son’s band Corrupt Leaders. Now, she has her own song, “Any Cost” which apparently is a song bidding adieu (and good riddance) to former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. It remains to be seen if The Grindmother has anymore songs in the chamber, or if this is a schtick that is going to run dry quickly.
While an old man telling jokes is not, in fact, a novelty, an old lady providing the brutal vocalizations for a grindcore band is. Of course, for a lot of people that is all this will be: a novelty. One imagines, though, that’s she’s pretty serious about it, or at least actively enjoys it. So, you know, try not to be too condescending in your enjoyment of The Grindmother. This isn’t like that metal band that dressed like Ned Flanders. This is not a rapping granny situation here, people.
