Vince Staples is widely known for being someone unafraid to tell it like it is. The Long Beach rapper recently sat down for a long interview with Complex where he talked about a whole range of different topics, including a little bit about his upcoming album Big Fish Theory. It was when he was asked about to weigh in on rap beefs however, where things got really interesting. The interviewer requested that Vince weigh in on who he thought won the biggest rap beef of 2017 thus far between Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma, and his answer was surprisingly refreshing.
“Sh*t is corny,” he said. When asked about Jay Z vs. Nas and Ice Cube vs. N.W.A his answer pretty much remained the same. “F**cking corny.” When pressed about the fact that rap fans love when two MCs go after one another that instead of goading them on the fans should, “Watch a Smack battle. They’re much better at it.”
“King of the Dot. You have the UW League in New Jersey. So many battle leagues. Go watch some Charlie Clips. I don’t wanna see people demean one another for no reason when they can have a phone conversation. Especially when they’re actually successful musicians. There is battle rap. I am a fan of that, but as far as the spitefulness of it? ‘Cause battle rappers are actually like all friends for the most part, and they write it, have fun, and talk about it on Facebook later. It’s real f**king cute, but all that other sh*t they can get the f**k out of here. That sh*t is corny as f**k. It’s like, ‘I’m gonna say really hurtful things about you for the sake of hip-hop.’ Oh.”
Vince was also asked about his new album Big Fish Theory, but he remained coy, unwilling to get too deep into the details. “It encompasses things: Being larger than life in a smaller world, so to say,” he explained. “I just think it was a culmination of things I had been learning over the past few years, and coming to an understanding. Often times, music becomes a coping mechanism for people.”
