You may recall hearing recently that Chino Moreno, lead singer of Deftones, would be performing from inside a volcano during an Icelandic music festival. Sure, the rest of the band wouldn’t be joining him — although Deftones as a whole did perform during the festival as well — but still, it was a concert taking place inside a volcano. Well, the festival took place this past weekend and the world’s first public gig inside a volcano has officially happened with thankfully no one being burned alive.
There were 20 people who were able to get tickets for this one of a kind show, even for the price of a little under $2,000. They had to travel 2 1/2 miles, either by walking or by taking a helicopter ride, and then they took a six-minute elevator ride down 400 feet into the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano.
There, they watched Moreno play three songs, a Morrissey cover, a David Bowie cover, and Deftones classic “Change (In the House of Flies).” An Icelandic singer-songwriter opened the show for him. So, in the end, it may have seemed like an awful lot of effort and exertion for a very brief concert, but again, it was a concert happening deep inside a volcano. A volcano! As a life experience, this would probably be pretty hard to beat, so getting a few songs from Chino Moreno would just be a nice bonus, especially if you are a Deftones fan.
