Simply put, the Fyre Festival, or whatever the Fyre Fest was supposed to be was a mess. Social media lit up late Thursday night when word started spreading that the most expensive music festival of the year was like one of those “what it looks like online vs. what it looks like when you get it in the mail” memes come to life. On steroids.
Most of Friday has been a series of damage control statements and now, festival co-organizer Billy McFarland has released his own statement in an interview with Rolling Stone. The 25-year-old tech entrepreneur calls today the toughest day of his life, and goes on to partially blame the weather for the failed festival and he even announced makeup dates.
“We were a little bit ambitious,” he said in the statement. “There wasn’t water or sewage. It was almost like we tried building a city out of nothing and it took almost all of our personal resources to make this happen, and everything we had, to make this festival go on. We thought we were ready and built two different festival sites.”
McFarland went on to say “the refunds are being processed” for all guests and announced the make-up dates will be “May 2018 in the U.S., free for everybody who signed up for this festival.” He also announced there will be a $1.50 per-ticket donation to the Bahamian Red Cross after the whole debacle so at least there is some good that will come out of all of this.
