Jamie Foxx is headed back to the small screen with a new series for Showtime called White Famous which will be loosely based around his experiences in the world of comedy. Here’s a synopsis of the series, via The Hollywood Reporter:
“A talented, young African-American comedian whose star is rising, forcing him to navigate the treacherous waters of maintaining his credibility as he begins to cross over toward becoming “white famous.”
Tom Kapinos will be penning the script for White Famous. Kapinos teamed with David Duchovny on Showtime’s Californication, so he certainly has experience crafting an adult comedy, should the main character’s experiences involve a bit of play mixed in with the work as he ascends the Hollywood ladder. The writer/producer has also spent some time putting words in the mouth of Satan’s son on FOX’s Lucifer.
Will he put words in Jamie Foxx’s mouth, though? While this is based on his career, the description does call for a “young” comic. No disrespect toward Jamie Foxx, who still looks like he’s in his early 30s, but he’s two years shy of 50, so young doesn’t really feel accurate. Maybe they’ll try to make it work or maybe Foxx will play another role — time will tell. With plenty of film projects on his plate, though, it would be quite impressive if Foxx found the time to fit in a starring role in a series.
Should the series get picked up by Showtime, it would mark Foxx’s second TV series. Longtime fans will remember growing up with The Jamie Foxx Show, which ran for five seasons on The WB. Foxx also got his start on television with a breakout stint on In Living Color in the early ’90s.
The idea for White Famous sounds promising. With a few good names like Foxx and Kapinos behind it, the show has a great chance at being picked up for a full season.
