Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘The Hamilton Mixtape’ Earns The Top Spot On The Billboard 200

Much like everything else associated with award-winning Broadway play, The Hamilton Mixtape scored big on the Billboard 200 charts, landing at no. 1 for the week ending December 8. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Midas touch extended to the project, which ended its first week of sales with 187,000 equivalent album units with 169,000 coming in the form of traditional album sales, per Billboard.

Those sales represent no easy feat in today’s musical landscape but the album benefited heavily from the overall success of the play and people’s familiarity with the music featured. The Hamilton Mixtape, which Manuel produced with the likes of Questlove and producer !llmind, reimagines songs from the play by matching them with a star-studded cast of musicians. The 23-song effort features the likes of Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Chance The Rapper, Nas, John Legend, Wiz Khalifa, K’naan and more

By earning the top spot on the Billboard 200, the new album is actually more successful than the original Broadway cast recording, which peaked at no. 3. However, the latter has already been certified double platinum by the RIAA so the The Mixtape has a long way to go along those lines. Per the report, The Hamilton Mixtape also becomes the first compilation album to earn that many first week sales since since Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music’s Cruel Summer notched 205,000 copies when it debuted back in 2012.
