The Florida Marlins and Giancarlo Stanton have agreed to a record 13-year, $325 million contract extension that could potentially keep the outfielder in Miami through the year 2027. The 25-year-old All-Star outfielder is coming off his 5th season in the majors in which he led the National League in home runs with 37 and hit .288/.395/.555 with an fWAR of 6.1.
The extension buys out Stanton’s last two arbitration years and adds 11 more. It also contains a full no-trade clause and a player-option to opt out after 6 years, which would allow Stanton to become a free agent again after the 2020 season.
This is a record contract in MLB; the previous high was signed by Alex Rodriguez for 10 years and $275 million after the 2007 season.
