When a man tells you not to pet the wolf he’s got tied up on a leash, it’s probably best to listen and not pet the wolf. Atlanta Braves’ outfielder Jonny Gomes didn’t heed that advice and it almost cost him his life. The story was brought to the public’s attention by none other than Los Angeles Dodgers’ announcer and national treasure Vin Scully.
According to Scully, the incident happened when Gomes was twelve and working on his grandmother’s house. A hired hand came by to help and brought along a special visitor: a wolf on a leash. Yes, a wolf on a freaking leash. Despite being warned by the man to not get near the wolf, when the man tied the wolf up and went to mend a fence, Gomes saw his opportunity. He approached the wolf thinking, “Hey why not, I can talk to him and maybe pet him and it’ll go swell.”
And like most incidents with a wolf, it did not go swell.
“The wolf attacks him and has knocked him down on his chest, just about ready to devour him.”
However just as Gomes was making peace with his last moments on Earth, something happened to change the wolf’s mind.
“Jonny suddenly totally and completely relaxed. He was done. He knew it. And whatever he did by relaxing, the wolf decided uh huh I don’t have a rival here. And the wolf got off his chest. Jonny got up and walked away.”
Gomes escaped death that day and went on to rock great facial hair and win a World Series.
