Remember that trick play where a quarterback would walk over to the sideline complaining about the ball? And then he’d take off while the defense was half-asleep trying to figure out what was going on? Yeah, that play was neat. It was sneaky, kinda cheap and pretty damn ballsy. It was the perfect trick play.
Then some kid tried to pull it off in the middle of a high school game and got absolutely demolished. Like, he got knocked into oblivion.
Ever since then, high school coaches have been on the hunt for the next trick play, one that would give their team the edge over an opponent. On Friday night, Concord High School in California appears to have pulled it off with this “hidden ball trick.”
As you can see in the video, it’s impossible to tell which player has the ball after the huddle. By the time the kickoff team finally figures out what’s going on, the returner is streaking up the sideline for a touchdown.
Sure, this may not work all the time, and some coverage teams may opt to back off and wait for the huddle to break before committing one way or the other. That being said, who cares? It’s fun. Can’t wait to see a college team give it a run soon.
