A Fighter’s Mom Once Tried To Punch UFC Champ Jon Jones In The Hospital

In an excerpt from a documentary about Swedish fighter Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson, his mother detailed the time she almost fought his toughest opponent, current UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon “Bones” Jones in the hospital.

In the aftermath of UFC 165, Jones and Gustafsson had beaten each other up pretty thoroughly. As Gustafsson’s mom explains, she was waiting at the hotel for Alex to arrive when:

Suddenly, we get a text saying we should come to the emergency room where both Alex and Jones were. So we took a cab there and the first thing I saw when I got there was Jones – completely scarred and bruised, with his foot in a bandage. I was so pissed off! I could’ve gone over there and just knock him out cold. But the others held me back and told me to calm down.

I love the idea of Alex’s mom turning into Scrappy-Doo, screaming the Swedish equivalent of “Lemme at ‘im, I’ll murderlize him, let me go!” After seeing Alex as a bloody mess, his mom’s maternal instincts took over, which didn’t bode well for Jones when the Gustafssons left:

When we left I took the same way back and I saw Jones again. And he just looked at me and nodded his head like this. And I was all black in my eyes. I was so mad I could have just as easily punched him then and there. You do everything to protect your child, it doesn’t matter the opponent. You just defend your kid, that’s the instinct. I didn’t care about if they’d gone a match for the belt. It wasn’t at all in my head, at that point.

At least Momma Gustafsson showed the restraint to not actually beat up Jon Jones, unlike the amateur MMA fight that ended with a mom jumping the cage last year.
