I don’t do things like “watch the news” or “read” but I’m awake long enough during the day to know that gun control is a pretty controversial topic here in the good, ol’ U.S. of A. So imagine the response that the Huntsville Stars minor league baseball team of the Southern League announced that this Wednesday night will be “Second Amendment Night” at Joe W. Davis Stadium in beautiful Huntsville, Alabama.
Thanks to the generous crew at Larry’s Pistol and Pawn, three lucky fans are going to leave the July 3 game – after the fireworks display, of course! – as the big winners of three firearms. Up for grabs are a Ruger American rifle with scope, Ruger 22/45 MKII pistol and a Ruger 10/22 TD rifle, and fans can have a shot at winning these used firearms by purchasing $5 raffle tickets. And, of course, the winners will have to pass a background check.
But that’s not going to stop people from being absolutely furious over this idea.
That’s just a quick sample that I grabbed from Huntsville’s Facebook page, but there are plenty of people both praising and criticizing the idea, while the Stars seem to have no intention of backing off or responding to those critics.
Politics aside, I think there’s a big problem with the fact that the image for the flyer says absolutely nothing about a no gun policy at the ballpark, as the phrase “… an exciting night of baseball filled with patriotism, fun, food, and firepower!” might lead some people to believe that it’s a BYOG event, especially since fans are admitted for free with their NRA membership cards.
