Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez died on Wednesday morning. Hernandez reportedly committed suicide in his cell at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Mass., according to the police.
Keith Hernandez is a former first baseman who played in the majors from 1974 to 1990. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, and Cleveland Indians during his career, registering a .296 career batting average and winning the National League MVP in 1979. Additionally, Hernandez made a famous cameo on Seinfeld.
They are very obviously different people. However, according to a the Brandon Sun in Manitoba, Canada, they are not. In the headline of their story about Hernandez’s death, the paper mistakenly refers to him as “Keith Hernandez.”

So this is bad. This is an extremely bad thing and someone probably owes Keith Hernandez a lengthy apology for saying that he died. The good news (if you can call it that) is that it only happened in the headline and not in the body of the story, so it’s not like the paper thought that Keith Hernandez was a 27 year old former New England Patriots tight end who was serving a life sentence for murder.
But to the person(s) at the Brandon Sun who did not catch this, just dust yourselves off and learn from this. We all make mistakes, but do the fine folks of Manitoba a service and be better the next time.
