Don’t look away now. Just when it seemed like Alabama was starting to pull away against Auburn in the Iron Bowl, Jason Smith pulled in one of the catches of the season to bring the Tigers within six with a quarter to play.
The catch struck an immediate chord with Auburn fans who saw the Prayer at Jorden-Hare just over two years ago, when Auburn, in the running for a spot in the final BCS Championship game, faced Georgia at home and were facing 4th and 18 with under a minute to go.
The situation tonight was not quite so drastic, with the Tigers facing 3rd and 12 late in the third quarter, but Alabama had just scored a touchdown to go up 19-6 seconds before. Before this catch, it looked like the Derrick Henry freight train was starting to pick up speed and would slowly run Auburn into the ground.
Your average college football fan will normally point to Ohio State-Michigan or Florida-Florida State as the go-to rivalries, but with the Kick Six and now this catch, the Iron Bowl is proving it’s got the weirdness to go toe-to-toe with any rivalry in the nation. Strange things afoot on the plains of Auburn, Alabama, tonight.
