In the titanic tussle between Mets affiliate the Las Vegas 51s and the El Paso Chihuahuas, the only real loser is this trash can in the dugout. Or it’s the fans, I’m not entirely sure. Either way, the can takes two foul balls in succession.
It’s a fun video, though, especially when Vegas player Johnny Monell picks up the fallen trash can the first time and places the lid on his head as a helmet.
That’s when the second foul ball comes firing in and rattles around inside the lid, nearly taking out Modell and leading to a celebration in the team’s dugout. Pretty fancy hitting on the part of the Chihuahuas, putting the fear into the opposing team and the janitorial staff. I would take full credit and claim it was on purpose, a bit of strategy on the part of the coaching staff. Tony La Russa would’ve, and people love him.
