The Miami Dolphins have had a puzzling offseason so far, trading for maligned Eagles cornerback Byron Maxwell and cutting ties with veteran Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes. Sure, the 32-year-old Grimes is approaching the age at which many cornerbacks seriously lose a step, but Maxwell proved he was ill-suited for the primary corner spot last year in Philadelphia. But if a report by Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole is true, effectiveness wasn’t Miami’s primary concern with Grimes — that would be Miko Grimes, his wife.
Cole alleges that not only did the Dolphins release Grimes because of his wife’s combative behavior, but three separate GMs claimed anonymously that she’s the reason they won’t sign him. And how did a woman whose angry tweeting (among other things) is blamed for her husband’s ouster respond? Why, she tweeted angrily, of course.
Before Mika made her account private, Sporting News captured her outburst:
Normally, we scoff at what overly-conservative NFL executives call “distractions,” and with good reason — many of them still consider a man’s sexuality a distraction. And yet, Mrs. Grimes has sent threats to journalists and gotten arrested for fighting with police. We’re certainly not saying that those GMs are in the right for refusing to sign Grimes based on something that has absolutely nothing to do with his performance on the field, but it’s more fair to call Miko a disruptive influence than, say, Marshawn Lynch’s refusal to talk to media or the St. Louis Rams’ Ferguson protest.
Brent Grimes will almost surely find a team, though, and if what his wife says online affects that squad’s win-loss record, then they have a lot more to worry about than Miko.
