Joel Ward’s last-second goal with only 1.3 seconds left in the third period of Game 1 helped give the Washington Capitals a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night. The win allowed the Caps to steal home-ice advantage from the Rangers in their second-round series.
The Capitals led 1-0 most of the night after a first period goal by Alex Ovechkin, but the Rangers got the equalizer with only 4:39 left in regulation on a Jesper Fast tip-in off a point shot from Kevin Hayes. The game appeared headed to overtime before Ward’s last-second heroics on a perfect feed by Ovechkin from behind the net.
Game 2 is set for Saturday as 12:30 ET.
