As happens in baseball, Jacoby Ellsbury left the team that drafted him — in this case, the Boston Red Sox — for the Yankees after New York offered him a $156 million contract two years ago. The $21 million Ellsbury now makes per season is quite the bump from the $8 million he was making in Boston, a fact that Red Sox star David Ortiz is well aware of.
While standing on second base in a game between Boston and New York on Sunday night, Ortiz took the opportunity to talk some trash to his former teammate:
Surely it was in good fun — Ellsbury gives the approving head nod — but Ortiz is only making $16 million this season, so he has reason to be jealous.
