The bout between Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and Rick Story was pegged two welterweight contendersthat could end at a moment’s notice. And when that moment came, it was a doozy.
Cerrone and Story fought evenly for the first round, including some impressive ground work from both and a great escape from Cerrone. In the second round though, Cowboy landed a ridiculous 4-hit combo that capped off with a vicious headkick that effectively ended the fight. Story stumbled around to octagon a bit and looked to defend himself but was far to out of his senses to mount any real defense.
For Cerrone, it’s his third fight at welterweight and all three have been spectacular finishes in his favor. His win over Alex Oliveira earlier this year in his debut at 170 pounds came by way of an absurd in-air triangle choke just two minutes and 30 seconds into the first round. Then, in June he kept his spree going with a brutal barrage of punches that finished off Patrick Cote.
As impressive as both of those were, and they were highlight reel worthy, the combo against story might the best of the bunch. So what does Cowboy do after three awe-inspiring victories in his new weight class? Well, he asked for a title shot in his old one, because MMA makes no sense.
