Former NFL and Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie’s mother and father both passed away on Wednesday morning. According to a post on Flutie’s Facebook page, his father, Dick, “had been ill” and died of a heart attack while he was in the hospital. If that wasn’t tragic enough already, Flutie’s mother, Joan, died of a sudden heart attack within an hour of her husband’s passing. The two were married for 56 years.
Flutie, in the post, describes what amazing supporters his parents were for him, including his dad being one of his coaches, and his mom working at his games. Read the heartbreaking Facebook post from Flutie below.
Flutie’s parents were also grandparents — Doug and his wife Laurie have two children of their own — Doug Flutie Jr. and Alexa Flutie. Flutie played in the NFL as well as the Canadian Football League for 19 years with various teams, but most notably the Buffalo Bills. Flutie won the Heisman Trophy for Boston College during the 1984 season, as well as the Walter Camp Award and Maxwell Award.
