The Kansas City Chiefs’ home-opener at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night held a bit more significance than usual for one of their players; it marked the first time that safety Eric Berry had stepped on the field for a regular season game since being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma last December.
After successfully completing his chemotherapy treatment, the 26-year-old Berry was cleared to return to the field and resume his football career this July. He got his reps in during the preseason as he fought to win his job back, but the regular season return to Arrowhead had to be a very special moment for the young man.
Prior to Thursday’s game against the Broncos, Berry was surprised at the Chiefs hotel by the nurses who treated him during his time in the hospital.
