Seattle pitcher Felix Hernandez was originally signed by the Mariners as an amateur free-agent when he was only 16 years old. Prior to that, it was well-documented by Venezuelan baseball scouts that he was capable of throwing 90 mph fastballs when he was only 14. So, perhaps what we saw from his 6-year-old son Jeremy on Sunday should not be all that surprising.
While throwing out a ceremonial first pitch, Jeremy fired a laser to his dad, proving the apple didn’t fall far from the tree at the Hernandez household.
He has some work to do on his lower-body mechanics, and he’ll want to lengthen that stride a bit if he wants to get full velocity. But that can all be worked out over the next decade or so.
