While Floyd Mayweather has more money and accolades, Conor McGregor has come into their feud a big winner in many of the verbal sparring matches the two have engaged in. And it’s not hard to see why: the brash Irishman is so loud and enthusiastic, and he often strikes right after knocking out the latest fighting great the UFC puts in front of him. But in this latest chapter to the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor war, Floyd is getting off to a very strong start.
The boxing legend put up a pretty incindiary Instagram video featuring footage of McGregor losing to Nate Diaz at UFC 196. In the background, Rich Gang’s “Tapout” plays as Conor is choked by Nate, followed by footage of a victorious Mayweather in the ring shaking his head. It ends with the caption “49-0 vs Conor The Notorious Quitter.”
But wait, it gets better! Perhaps in the spirit of Christmas, Floyd has decided to turn this into a contest. “CAPTION THIS!” he wrote on the Instagram post. “Best caption wins $10,000.00. The winner will be announced on Monday, Dec 19.”
At the time of this writing, there are over 110,000 comments on the video after seven hours. Some of our current favorites include “Hands are made for millions not tapping,” “The Money Team vs The Motherf**king Tapper,” and “When both say they GREAT….but only one has never been on the canvas.”
It’s not all Floyd fans chasing that paper. There’s a pretty decent contingent of Conor fans in there heckling right back at Mayweather. “He will beat you any day boxing is a wimpy sport compared to ufc you will get crushed by Coner,” says one. “Fight him and see what happens you defensive little p**sy,” another proclaims. And then “Remember guys keep your comments short floyd cant read.”
All this for a fight many say will never happen in a million years. And we thought so too … for a while. But there’s a certain kind of smoke happening lately. A lot of people in the know around Conor’s camp are saying he’s serious about getting the Mayweather fight, and why not? It would be a nine figure payday for him. You’d think Floyd would be happy to get that nice round number of 50 fights on his record too. He’d probably figure it wouldn’t even require too much hard work to get it, seeing as McGregor isn’t even a boxer.
But Mayweather is one of the most difficult athletes in sports to work with. Even if Conor McGregor chases him relentlessly, we could be waiting years before the details are ironed out for a fight. Until something big happens, at least the back and forth between the two remains entertaining.
