Indianapolis Motor Speedway chairman Mari Hulman George started to deliver the iconic “start your engines” line before Sunday’s Indianapolis 500. The problem was that she didn’t get to finish the line on her own. Some woman standing next to George took the liberty of belting out the call before quickly turning away. Exactly why the call was fumbled isn’t clear, but this was bound for disaster from the start, it seems.
Yes, there was clapping and smiling afterward, but the kind that only comes from witnessing something terribly awkward that also happened to be broadcast on national television.
