The Tennessee Titans Have Fired Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt

The Tennessee Titans fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after an abysmal 1-6 start in the AFC South, the worst division in the NFL. The team has named assistant head coach/tight ends coach Mike Mularkey as interim head coach.

Whisenhunt ends his tenure in Tennessee with a 3-20 overall record, and when you see that number, it’s easy to understand why Titans management was fed up. They have their quarterback of the future in Marcus Mariota, but Whisenhunt hasn’t been able to scheme ways to keep him upright or on the field, and his strength was always considered to be coaching the quarterback position.

As head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Whiz coached a Kurt Warner-led squad to a narrow Super Bowl defeat, only to spend years in the Ryan Lindley and John Skelton wasteland. After he was fired there, he was the offensive coordinator in San Diego for one of Philip Rivers’ best seasons. But when the Titans plucked him from the Chargers, Whisenhunt was faced with another dreadful QB situation in 2014, shuffling between Jake Locker, Charlie Whitehurst and Zach Mettenberger. Even after their awfulness gave them a high pick and Mariota, Whisenhunt couldn’t elevate the Titans to anything other than a cellar-dweller.

Mularkey is a perfectly fine coach, but doubtful to be the long-term solution. The Titans, along with the Dolphins and possibly other teams, will be evaluating their long-term coaching situation at the end of the year.
