It’s time we held people who attempt to sing the ‘Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’ theme song to a higher standard.
As you may know, we at With Leather consider ourselves experts on the Fresh Prince mythos. The ‘Fresh Prince’ theme song is one of those things people everywhere claim to know, but few can put it all together reliably. It’s like Sir Mix-a-Lot’s ‘Baby Got Back.’ Sure, you know bits and pieces of it, but if I put you on the spot and told you to karaoke it from beginning to end, there’s a solid chance you’d f**k it up. It’s not your fault, it’s just one of those songs.
Enter: Yankees field reporter Meredith Marakovits. Meredith is getting a bit of Internet fame today for “busting out” the ‘Fresh Prince’ theme. I’ll let you listen for yourself.
“Chillin’ out maxin’ and when a couple of guys they were up to no good … “
Meredith left out the context of Will Smith’s legendary schoolyard fight, namely that he was chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool and all shootin’ some b-ball outside of the school when a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in his neighborhood. But oh, she’s a lovely sideline reporter and they are soulless sports news guys, so the folks at Yes Studios thought it was “awesome.”
Yes, awesomely wrong.
Please do not give glory to people who almost get it right. If she’d hit the non-syndicated verse about orange juice in a champagne glass, then yes, she is awesome. Until then, she is a lady who failed at a popular culture milestone.
Sorry to be harsh, you guys, but this blog is about Fresh Prince real talk.
