Ahead of the 2015 Masters, which tees off Round One at Augusta National on Thursday, Nike Golf has released a film titled Ripple, showing how Tiger Woods inspired an adolescent Rory McIlroy to golfing greatness more than a decade ago.
The film begins with a young McIlroy fixated on the television, watching as Woods racks up victories at various major events. McIlroy and his dad continue to follow Tiger’s career from afar, with Rory emulating Tiger’s swing as best he can. The film then shows McIlroy’s progression from amateur golfer to professional, culminating with him and his childhood hero sharing the same tee box together on the PGA tour.
“Great shot there, man,” Tiger says to Rory after his tee shot.
It’s fun to imagine that a young golf fan will be watching McIlroy this weekend at the Masters the same way McIlroy used to watch Woods once upon a time. And it’s fun to remember how great Tiger Woods was not so long ago.
