ESPN’s Keith Olbermann, like many in the entertainment business have reluctantly been having to do, said goodbye to late night host David Letterman, who taped his last show ever on Wednesday evening. Olbermann touched on how much Letterman incorporated sports into his shows including how he sent reporters to major events while somewhat mocking the seriousness of them, but also respecting them at the same time. He also mentioned how Letterman had a segment that portrayed elevator racing as an actual sport, and even used Bob Costas as the announcer in the early 1980s.
Olbermann also said in his tribute that the “greatest and most laugh out loud, inaccurate compliment” he ever received was from a 1986 Los Angeles Herald Examiner headline that read: ‘They call him the Letterman of television sportscasts.’
But perhaps the greatest compliment Olbermann paid to Letterman was when he described what it would be like if Letterman did a sports show instead of late night.
“If David Letterman did a sports show, he’d get the rest of us canceled or fired.”
I couldn’t have put it any better. Thank you for this absolutely perfect tribute, Olbermann.
