The Rio Olympics are finally underway, with Friday night’s opening ceremony kicking things off in an explosive fashion. With the strong environmental themes and Giselle Bündchen striding the length of the stadium, the ceremony certainly stirred up plenty of conversation online. While the Olympic Games may be a worldwide test of our nations’ greatest athletes, it is also the time for regular schmoes to tweet out their opinions from their couches.
A major theme of the night was global warming and climate change, with the projection heavy production painting a grim picture of the future without change. While this may be an admirable goal, many called out the irony and hypocrisy of Brazil criticizing environmental issues.
Makes sense Brazil would focus on global warming. Probably distracts from Zika, corrupt government, and ocean of poop.

Another highlight of the opening ceremonies was the presence of supermodel Giselle Bündchen, a famous Brazilian who… walked a lot. In all seriousness, this was apparently Bündchen’s final runway walk, ending her career on a high note. She was also seen dancing wildly in the stands surrounded by a bunch of normal people, which endeared her to many on Twitter.
I hope they keep cutting to Giselle dancing throughout the olympics. Just whenever there is a lull.

Between the team outfits (why so many ill-fitting blazers?), NBC’s aggressive commercial ration, and the general spectacle, Rio has already inspired more than a few jokes.
10 seconds of opening ceremony. 10 minutes of commercials…

It honestly feels like I've sat down to watch commercials with a little bit of Opening Ceremony here and there.

Every time NBC goes to commercial it's like missing an episode of Lost. How did we get here? What did I miss? #OpeningCeremony

These is only the first night, so expect plenty of snark in the days to come.
