Scott Van Pelt is a very proud graduate of the University of Maryland. He’s not shy about his love for the Terps, and loves to shoutout another fellow Maryland grad while doing highlights on SportsCenter with a “He a Terp!”
Van Pelt also puts his money where his mouth is, bringing financial support along with vocal support for Maryland as we learned via a brief Twitter exchange on Thursday afternoon.
Van Pelt, who is on vacation in Florida after wrapping up Masters coverage Sunday, was asked about a possible donation to help out Maryland’s student run sports radio station and committed to providing the rest of the funding needed to keep the station running despite being out on the golf course.
what do you need to be fully funded?

I got you. Playing golf now. Will cover this later. You're funded.

Now, $1,255 might not be an insane amount of money for someone as high up the ladder at ESPN as Van Pelt, but it’s still a good chunk of change and it’s extremely generous of him to be willing to cut a check for whatever the radio station needed. It’s also very much on brand for Van Pelt to do this from the golf course, combining two of his favorite things — Maryland and golf — into one. The only way this could get more Van Pelt is if he was sending them his winnings after getting heavy on a parlay to fund the station.
Sports writers and broadcasters aren’t shy about letting you know where they went to school — Did you know Northwestern made the NCAA Tournament? Do you understand how important that is? Do you? I don’t think you do, read these 500 columns about it — but it’s very cool to see someone like SVP giving back to make sure that the next generation of Terps can follow their dreams into sports broadcasting the way he did.
