Jamie O’Brien is a very experienced surfer who’s tackled waves all over the globe. At a certain point, though, a man has to get creative to challenge himself. In O’Brien’s case, that means just doing whatever insane thing your Instagram followers tell you to do:
What sparked this whole idea?
I got a direct message on Instagram that said it would be cool if you lit yourself on fire, and I kinda thought, why not? So I went to Red Bull and said, “Hey, I want to light myself on fire and get barreled at Teahupo’o.” They looked at me like, “Are you for real?” and I told them I was…
Normally when someone says on social media, “it would be cool if you set yourself on fire,” it’s an awful troll of some kind harrassing you. O’Brien might be the only person who takes them literally. If they told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it, Jamie? Don’t answer that.
But lo and behold, O’Brien (who goes by JOB) stepped up to the dare, and pulled it off:
The video isn’t embeddable, but go here to view it in full. It’s a good thing JOB brought a safety crew, because most times a person lights himself on fire on a dare from his bro, it’s on the spur of the moment, with the assistance of alcohol, and it ends in the emergency room. Of course, there was another reason that O’Brien lit himself on fire besides “Why not?” He was promoting his webseries, Who is JOB 5.0. Disappointingly, he doesn’t spend every episode on fire.
