TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin found himself in handcuffs early Thursday morning when he was arrested for allegedly hitting a police officer during a bar fight in San Antonio. There’s really no great time to be arrested, but the Horned Frogs probably aren’t too thrilled about their star senior QB being taken to jail just two days before they are scheduled to play in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon.
A report from a local NBC affiliate says the fight started when people at the bar recognized Boykin and engaged in a verbal altercation that eventually became violent. Here are more details:
Boykin reportedly became upset and started trying to punch them just before 2 a.m. After Boykin struck a bar employee, he and his friends were removed from the establishment, authorities said.
San Antonio bicycle-patrol officers arrived shortly after and, along with bar bouncers, tried to break up the fight. Police said Boykin’s friends restrained the quarterback and told officers they would take him back to their hotel.
According to police, Boykin then started trying to punch officers who arrived to assist. Several officers took Boykin to the ground, where the fight continued until they threatened to use a stun gun on him.
Boykin was arrested and faces charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and public intoxication.
Another news affiliate in San Antonio reported that Boykin struck the police officer by accident while trying to punch one of the patrons involved in the fight.
At this point, it’s unknown what Boykin’s status for the Alamo Bowl is, but TCU did release a statement on the incident.
“We are aware of a situation last night and are gathering information. We will continue to closely monitor this and evaluate additional details as they become available.”
It would really be too bad if a dumb drunk fight causes Boykin to miss his final game at TCU after a great career — especially when it’s a big bowl game — but punching police officers is bad. Don’t do that.
