Usain Bolt used his incredibly impressive semifinal performance as a warm-up en route to a victory that looked way too easy in the 100 meters. His time of 9.81 seconds didn’t set any records, but that’s ok because he’s the first sprinter to ever win three straight golds in the 100.
Heading into the race the only ones who seemed to have a chance were the USA’s Justin Gatlin, as well as fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake, a silver medalist in 2012. And Gatlin almost had him!

Honestly, you almost want to give him a gold medal just for being the closest that anyone’s come in years! Instead, he’ll have to take solace in the silver. Canada’s Andre De Grasse took the bronze.

Really though, was there ever any doubt? Like Katie Ledecky in the pool, it’s just a given that all the other competitors are fighting for silver when Usain steps on the track. It’s been that way for years and while you’d like to think that at age 29 this was Bolt’s prime and he’ll start going downhill, a 31 year-old Michael Phelps proved this past week that with enough work, freaks don’t have to slow down like the rest of us.
See you in four years, Usain, maybe next time you’ll let someone else stay in the camera frame with you.
