To say something is “Christopher Guest-y” is a high compliment considering that he’s the guy behind This Is Spinal Tap,The Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, the guy who popularized the mockumentary in film, which would lead to its popularity as a format in television on shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation and Modern Family. It only seems fitting that Guest would now bring his brand of mockumentary to television with Family Tree, starring the awesome Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, Girls). The series, which premieres on HBO (and the BBC2) in May, is about a recently single and unemployed 30-something man (O’Dowd) who discovers himself by investigating his “wacky” extended family. The usual Christopher Guest regulars — Michael McKean, Fred Willard, Don Lake, Ed Begley Jr., and Jim Piddock — also appear, sometimes with toothbrushes.
