Last week the powers that be announced that The Simpsons would be doing a crossover episode with Family Guy, and that it would take place on Seth MacFarlane’s side of the playground. For the most part, this news was met with the type of reaction you’d get from filling a Hefty bag with wasps and releasing it in a crowded coffee shop: panic, anger, confusion, etc.
This weekend at Comic-Con, Simpsons executive producer Al Jean revealed that the show will be doing a second crossover episode in the near future, and depending how you feel about crossover episodes on a macro level, this one seems a little more promising: Futurama is coming to Springfield in 2014.
Speaking with EW after the session, Jean revealed the reasoning behind the blending of these two worlds. “Futurama is such an easy fit,” he says. “It’s really funny, and their show lends itself to any variety of plot lines. By having them on, we have a little freedom… The biggest thrill for me is that we don’t have to adjust the animation style.”
The plot will revolve around bad boys Bender and Bart: “Bender has to come back from the future to kill Bart because there’s something that Bart does now that makes the future really, really, really bad,” Jean continues. [EW]
See, between the two shows existing under the same Groening umbrella and The Simpsons’ long — mostly “Treehouse of Horror”-related — history of Springfield hosting visitors from outer space and/or the future, this crossover feels more natural to me than the Family Guy one, which reeks of some highly-compensated man in a suit trying to take two piles of money and make, like, one really big pile of money. I don’t know. I guess we’ll see. Bender as the Terminator is a great idea on paper, if nothing else.
Oh, and speaking of “Treehouse of Horror”…
Guillermo del Toro has directed the couch gag for this fall’s annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween episode, which was screened for the room to much delight.
I want to see this right now.
