Well I guess we finally have an answer to the whole “So is Cecily Strong going to host Weekend Update by herself after Seth Meyers leaves to take over for Jimmy Fallon at Late Night, or is the show going to give her a co-host, like, say, Saturday Night Live head writer and stand-up comedian Colin Jost, to name one candidate I selected at random without glancing at the trade news early this afternoon” thing. It’s the latter.
Jost has been head writer at SNL since 2012, first joining the show’s writing staff in 2005. He has won three WGA Awards, a Peabody Award and has been nominated for eight Emmys for his work on the series. Jost is a 2004 graduate from Harvard University and was president of the Harvard Lampoon. He wrote and starred in the upcoming Paramount feature Staten Island Summer, based on his days as a lifeguard.
This isn’t the first time SNL has paired up the show’s head writer with a big shining star cast member for Update duties. In fact, it’s kind of become a trend, what with the Fey/Fallon, Fey/Poehler, and Meyers/Poehler teams that have sat at the desk over the past decade and a half. And seeing as the four people in that last sentence have gone on to become award-winning sitcom stars, best-selling authors, beloved award show hosts, and the faces of NBC’s new late-night schedule, I suppose it’s hard to argue with the formula. I guess what I’m saying here is, hey, no pressure, Colin Jost and Cecily Strong.
