We told you a little bit about The Knick, Steven Soderbergh’s new Cinemax series, back in March when the first vague, creepy-ass teaser showed up. Here’s a refresher: Clive Owen plays a turn-of-the-century surgeon — whose name I have chosen to believe is “Dr. Mustache” — at New York’s at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital who is “pushing the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.” So it’s kind of like Masters of Sex, but with horrifying medical nightmares instead of sexy sex experiments. I imagine that’s not how they pitched it to Cinemax, but you get the idea.
And now there’s an actual, for real, full-length trailer to go with that description. I don’t know exactly where chloroforming one patient and accidentally lighting another on fire during surgery — unless that’s actually the same patient in both clips in which case GEEZ — fall on the scale of early-1900s medicinal boundary pushing, but I’ve got to believe they were somewhere up near the high end. Yup, their story seems to check out.
In a related story, I really do not want to go back in time to 1900 to have surgery.
