Snipers are a major deal right now, thanks to the success of American Sniper. But before the movie hit theaters, there was already a high-profile sniper-related television project in the works: an adaptation of the 2007 film Shooter, with the movie’s star, Mark Wahlberg, attached to executive produce. With sniper popularity at an all-time high, the show has landed a newly cemented pilot commitment from USA.

Written by John Hlavin (Underworld: Awakening, The Shield) based on the best-selling Bob Lee Swagger novel by Stephen Hunter, Point of Impact, and the 2007 movie, the action drama centers on a highly decorated Marine sniper living in exile who is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to kill the president. Ultimately double-crossed and framed for the attempt, he goes on the run to track the real killer and find out who exactly set him up, and why.
The show was originally set up at TNT until Paramount TV negotiated a deal to get the script in front of USA, who was quick to snatch it up upon reading. At the moment, the pilot doesn’t have a star or director attached, though that should be expected to change within a matter of weeks.
