The last time the Emmys were hosted by the same person at least two years in a row was in the 1970s, when Johnny Carson dozed off while introducing the cast of Upstairs, Downstairs from 1971 to 1974. This year, the non-consecutive honor will go to Andy Samberg, who, thanks to starring on a Fox sitcom, convinced Fox (the home of the Emmys) to let the Comedy Bang! Bang! writing staff, including Scott Aukerman, give him their best MY WIFE material.
In an interview with Vulture, via Splitsider, Aukerman said:
Andy Samberg is hosting the Emmys this year, and I’ve known Andy for a while, ever since I was his head writer on the MTV Movie Awards. He’s a huge fan of Comedy Bang! Bang! so he approached me and my head writer, Neil Campbell. I said, “If you can take our entire writing staff, we can do it.” He’s such a big fan of the show that he said yes. So we’re all going to be writing the Emmys this year, which is crazy. (Via)
It’s been awhile since the Emmys had anything on the level of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s monologue(s) at the Golden Globes, or Hugh Jackman’s opening Oscars number, written by Dan Harmon, Ben Schwartz, and Rob Schrab. Hiring Aukerman, Bachelor brother Neil Campbell, and the rest of the CBB staff is promising, though. Just keep Samberg away from briefcases.
