Steven Soderbergh stopped directing movies two years ago and since then, he’s been keeping busy with some pretty outstanding work for the small-screen. A year after Michael Douglas took home the Emmy for his performance in the HBO movie Behind the Candelabra, Soderbergh premiered a new project on the network’s sister channel Cinemax. The Knick takes place in and around New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital during the turn of the 20th century and is a program unlike anything Cinemax has done before — and it might be safe to say that it’s unlike anything currently on television.
Clive Owen stars in the series as the brilliant, drug addicted surgeon, Dr. John Thackery. He may say he feels better than ever in the above trailer, but if you’re familiar with the events that transpired last season, it’s a sure bet that is a lie. Last season ended with the good doctor checking into rehab to treat his cocaine addiction only to be given a revolutionary new medicine called “heroin.” Needless to say, by the looks of the kinetic trailer above, things are going to get a bit more complicated moving forward.
Soderbergh not only directs every episode of the series, he also acts as editor, cinematographer, and executive producer ensuring every detail of his vision is achieved. The first season is available to watch in its entirety on HBO Go and On Demand, so now’s the time to catch up. Season 2 of The Knick will hit Cinemax on October 16th.
