Leah Remini has taken on the role of Scientology whistleblower since she left the “church” in 2013. She’s openly discussed what she witnessed during her many, many years there, including why she left. And she isn’t even close to being finished. In an upcoming interview with ABC’s 20/20, Remini is going even further in her exposition, touching on one of the church’s most revered and sensitive figures: Tom Cruise.
“Being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself… you are evil,” Remini told ABC’s Dan Harris in a new promotional clip from the interview.
Another former Scientologist, Paul Haggis, who was featured in Alex Gibney’s devastating HBO documentary Going Clear, recently criticized the media for not pressing Cruise hard enough when talking about the shady goings-on of the church. Gibney also echoed those sentiments. Remini seems to be trying to make up for that, discussing the secretive, blockbuster star all-too-happily on TV and in her new memoir, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology. Is the media gaining some ground by bringing up the Cruise subject indirectly? Could they even get an honest interview about Scientology with Cruise? That seems doubtful, considering 1) Cruise is extremely devoted to this place that treats him like a demi-god, and 2) Cruise is a good actor who can dance around questions that will make him or his people look bad. He’s also a charming mofo, which makes it easy to want to please him and hard to believe he’s a sheep — or shepherd.
Remini’s 20/20 interview will air this Friday at 10 p.m., Eastern on ABC.
