Comedian Bill Burr’s new animated series F is for Family has been picked up by Netflix with a six-episode order.
The show will be set in the 1970s and focus on the Murphy family. In addition to serving as executive producer, Bill Burr will play the role of the father Frank Murphy. Laura Dern will play Frank’s wife, Sue Murphy, and Justin Long will fill out the main cast as Kevin, Frank and Sue’s oldest son. Interestingly, Kevin is designated as the oldest son, emphasis on “oldest.” No other Murphy children are announced as of yet, so more casting news will probably be coming soon.
Bill Burr promises that the show will hearken back to a time “when you could smack your kid, smoke inside and bring a gun to the airport.”
“F is for Family is the show I’ve always wanted to do,” said Burr. “It captures all the characters of my childhood the way I remember it to be. Fortunately Mike Price and everyone at Wild West seem to know the same people I knew growing up. It’s going to be a lot of fun to tell these stories.”
There is so little known about the series at this point that it is impossible to predict its success, but the fact that Bill Burr has Michael Price on his creative team is encouraging. Price is a writer and an executive producer on another very successful animated series, The Simpsons. A show like F is for Family is right in his comfort zone, and he will be able to help structure Bill Burr’s comedy in a TV series format. Burr is very funny, but he is familiar writing stand-up material, not writing for TV. Having a TV veteran around will be helpful for him, and it will give him more of a chance than other stand-up comics who have tried and failed in television.
