Cersei and Jaime Lannister are as twisted a brother/sister pairing as you can find anywhere on television. Or if you prefer to look at it another way, Game of Thrones’ power-hungry twins are the romantic couple that is most difficult and to root for without your full body cringing. As it turns out, watching siblings consistently make out and talk about all their incestuous activities is really uncomfortable, no matter how otherwise compelling they are as characters. In Season 6 though, things are about to get even weirder than they already are.
Cersei’s pretty much at rock bottom after being imprisoned, half-starved, and then forced to walk through the streets of King’s Landing naked while a grumpy lady rang a bell and yelled “shame!” a bunch of times. That would be rough for anybody. As Cersei herself, Lena Headey said this to Entertainment Weekly:
“It’s probably her most interesting season. She really has nothing to lose and she has everything to gain from a horrible position she finds herself in.”
In regards to Cersei’s relationship with her brother, apparently things are about to descend to even darker places. Which after the last five seasons seems nigh impossible, but the show is going there.
“Her relationship with Jaime is at an all-time weird level, It’s juicy, and it’s so f–king dark.”
Strong words for a pairing that has already been super dark for the entire extent of the show. There’s not much farther you can go after putting sibling rape and attempted child murder into the mix, but apparently, Game of Thrones is ready and willing to give it their best shot. In a season that is already supposed to have an “unprecedented” battle sequence, maybe the increased incest angle is the real reason the producers are calling it the best season yet.
