It’s been a while since we had any fresh news on AMC’s upcoming adaptation of Vertigo Comics’ Preacher, but we now have big news on a potential lead actor for the Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg produced series.

Word is that British actor Dominic Cooper is the top choice to star in the series. Cooper hasn’t played the lead in a lot of stuff, but he’s been a supporting actor in several high-profile projects. Most fans will probably know him as Howard Stark from the Captain America movies and Agent Carter. He’s also had parts in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dracula Untold and Need for Speed. His biggest leading role was in Fleming, a BBC miniseries about the life of James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Basically, Cooper specializes in playing old-timey British and World War II era dudes, so Preacher should be a fairly big departure.

If Cooper gets the role (it’s not set in stone yet), he’ll of course be playing the titular preacher, Jesse Custer. Here’s how AMC describes their take on the character…

“Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, and has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned his responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making him answer for his dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent.”

Sounds like they haven’t gone too far astray. What do you think of this potential casting news? Cooper certainly has the right look for the role. We’ll see if he has the proper grit to play it, though.
