The wild and never weary Donald Trump keeps on keeping down the campaign trail. He’ll next take another crack at his fellow GOP candidates during Wednesday evening’s CNBC debate, and as a warm-up, he spoke at a New Hampshire rally. An audience member asked Trump what he thought about the United States’ presence in the Middle East. Trump’s unusual response turned into a discussion of women’s headwear.
Trump’s stance on the burka is that some Islamic women may prefer to wear one rather than bother putting on makeup. Not only that, but Trump — who knows the meaning of hardship — used a superficial take on the matter to promote a hands-off approach to international relations:
“I saw a woman interviewed. They said, ‘We want to wear [burkas], we’ve worn them for a thousand years. Why would anybody tell us not to?’ They want to! What the hell are we getting involved for? Fact is, it’s easy. You don’t have to put on makeup, look how beautiful everyone looks. Wouldn’t it be easier? Right? Wouldn’t that be easy?”
Trump then did his best impression of a woman wearing a burka by sweeping his hand across his face and saying, “I’m ready, darling. Let’s go!” This is real life, 2015 America, ladies and gentlemen. Twitter was equal parts amused and offended:
Trump can feel for women in burkas because he has had a tough time too, as we now know
